Gabapentin Dosage Calculator for Dogs by Weight

Gabapentin is a prescription drug veterinarians use in dogs for chronic pain (including arthritis and nerve pain), seizures, and situational anxiety. Published references range from about 5 mg/kg up to 30 mg/kg every 8–12 hours; this calculator uses the conservative end of that range (5–20 mg/kg).
Enter your dog's weight to see the conservative dose range and common capsule sizes. Because gabapentin dosing is highly individualized — vets often start low and adjust — treat this as a reference to discuss with your veterinarian, not a prescription.

Safety warnings
Possible side effects
- Sedation and sleepiness (most common, often eases with continued use)
- Wobbliness / loss of coordination
- Mild drooling
- CRITICAL: some gabapentin oral liquids made for humans contain xylitol, which is extremely toxic to dogs. Never use a liquid unless your vet confirms it is xylitol-free. Capsules are the safer default.
- Gabapentin is prescription-only — do not borrow another pet's medication.
Do not use (or ask your vet first)
- Dogs with liver or kidney disease need vet-adjusted dosing
- Do not stop suddenly after long-term use — ask your vet about tapering
- Pregnant or nursing dogs — ask your vet first
When to see a veterinarian
- Extreme lethargy, collapse, or inability to stand after dosing
- Vomiting or diarrhea that persists
- Seizures continue or worsen
- You suspect an overdose — contact your vet or poison control immediately
- Pain does not improve within the timeframe your vet described
Frequently asked questions
How much gabapentin can I give my dog?
Published veterinary references span roughly 5–30 mg/kg every 8–12 hours, with 10–20 mg/kg every 8 hours a common protocol for chronic pain. This calculator shows the conservative 5–20 mg/kg end. Your vet individualizes the dose, so confirm before giving any.
How long does gabapentin take to work in dogs?
Usually 1–2 hours after an oral dose. For anxiety use, vets often dose 1.5–2 hours before the stressful event.
Can I use human gabapentin liquid for my dog?
Only if your veterinarian confirms it contains no xylitol. Some human gabapentin solutions contain xylitol, which can be fatal to dogs. Capsules are the safer choice unless your vet says otherwise.
Will gabapentin make my dog sleepy?
Sedation is the most common side effect and is often most noticeable when starting treatment. It frequently lessens as the dog adjusts. Report excessive or persistent sedation to your vet.
Can I stop gabapentin suddenly?
After prolonged use, stopping abruptly can cause withdrawal signs. Ask your veterinarian about a taper plan rather than stopping cold.
